Leading energy trader active across Europe
Our customers in the energy business profit from our international experience and local know-how. We have been trading in electricity for 90 years, and are represented through trading and sales companies in 29 European countries.
Alpiq is active on all major European energy exchanges, trading platforms and gas hubs. We trade in electricity, gas, coal and oil, standardised and structured products and emissions allowances and green certificates. We are active on the European trading platforms and in bilateral trading. We are constantly expanding our capabilities in the wholesale market. In important markets, trading and sales are backed by our proprietary production capacities. Our own physical power production capacity provides a hedge against electricity procurement and reduces risks, while professional fuel management ensures efficient fuel provisioning for our power plants.
We have been a licensed security dealer since 1999 and are subject to supervision by the Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority FINMA (former Federal Banking Commission (FBC)) in Switzerland. Based on the implementation of MiFID, Luxembourg-based Atel Derivatives benefits from the opportunity to offer services in commodity derivatives throughout Europe.
As one of Europe's leading energy trading companies, we draw on our competencies in energy trading and energy services. We engage in spot and futures trading as well as options trading on European energy exchanges. We conduct daily physical and financial buying and selling transactions with our European trading partners.
Continually expanding our leading role as an independent energy trader
In our business model, trading combines the vertically integrated power generation and sales links of the value chain with the liberalised wholesale market. Trading is used to optimise the company's portfolio. To this end we exploit fluctuations in production, supply and market demand.
At the same time, our trading combines geographically separate value chains in neighbouring markets so as to implement our strategies for position taking and market making. In so doing our traders draw on expertise in specialised areas such as risk management, compliance, analysis, business development and scheduling.
